This Week's Forgotten Gem of the '80s - Billy Burnette's "Don't Say No"
<p><img src="http://0.tqn.com/d/80music/1/0/u/G/-/-/billyburnette.jpg" border="0" alt="billyburnette.jpg" hspace="5" width="170" height="170" align="right" />The <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://humor.about.com/library/blds040999.htm">Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon game</a> may be beyond old hat by now, but a version of the phenomenon will probably always be applicable to the business of entertainment. I found that out this week in a big way in the wake of yet another Sunday afternoon viewing of the underrated 1987 teen dramedy <a href="http://about.pricegrabber.com/mrdr.php?url=http%3A%2F%2Fabout.pricegrabber.com%2Fsearch.php%3Fform_keyword%3Dcan%2527t%2Bbuy%2Bme%2Blove%2Bdvd&mode=about_80music"><em>Can't Buy Me Love</em></a>. (This may get a bit complicated, so strap yourselves in for some explanation.) Reminded yet again of my decades-long crush on that film's female star, Amanda Peterson, I quickly began personal research for my own personal list of the hottest actresses from '80s teen films. I immediately realized I wouldn't be able to tailor such a list directly for a site about '80s music, and yet I pressed on. By the end of the week my Amanda Peterson obsession had morphed into a full-blown fixation with the still impossibly beautiful Shawnee Smith, one of the memorable members of the acting ensemble in another 1987 classic, <a href="http://about.pricegrabber.com/mrdr.php?url=http%3A%2F%2Fabout.pricegrabber.com%2Fsearch_getprod.php%2Fmasterid%3D102045107%2Fsearch%3Dsummer+school+dvd%2Fst%3Dproduct%2Fsv%3Dtitle&mode=about_80music"><em>Summer School</em></a>.</p> <p>OK, so how does the Six Degrees concept fit in, you're surely asking? In brief, I arrived back at Smith today during a week of web travels that took me through the orbits of distant celestial '80s actresses from Mia Sara to Ione Skye to Daphne Zuniga. And though I had made dozens of connections as I researched this swirl of still-burning celebrity crushes, it finally occurred to me how I could relate this whole thing somehow to '80s music. So, with Shawnee Smith still on my mind (and in my Google search box), I decided to check the soundtrack listing for <em>Summer School</em>.</p> <p>Ah, now that you're up to speed, let's swing back around to music, at least for a little while. <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://80music.about.com/od/genresmovements/p/rootsrock.htm">Roots rock</a> artist and unsung '80s solo act Billy Burnette contributed a song to that soundtrack, a slice of knowledge that ultimately led me to sample <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gNWzd_fIYqE">"Don't Say No,"</a> a very modest hit from 1980. A rollicking, <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://classicrock.about.com/od/newreleases/a/101_rockabilly.htm">rockabilly</a>-influenced number that somehow garnered some attention among fans of <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://80music.about.com/od/genresmovements/p/newwave.htm">new wave</a> and early <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://altmusic.about.com/od/historyofaltindiemusic/a/altmusic101.htm">alternative rock</a>, this tune deserves a wider audience. It probably also deserves not to be buried toward the end of this Shawnee Smith shrine, but sometimes it's impossible to do anything but go where the fickle human organs (I'm speaking mostly of the brain and heart here, by the way) take us. So... any suggestions on where I might be able to find a rental copy of the 1988 remake <a href="http://about.pricegrabber.com/mrdr.php?url=http%3A%2F%2Fabout.pricegrabber.com%2Fsearch_getprod.php%2Fmasterid%3D100258507%2Fsearch%3Dblob+dvd%2Fst%3Dproduct%2Fsv%3Dtitle&mode=about_80music"><em>The Blob</em></a>?</p> <ul> <li><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gNWzd_fIYqE">Listen to "Don't Say No" and watch the music video here.</a> </li> <li><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://about.pricegrabber.com/mrdr.php?url=http%3A%2F%2Fabout.pricegrabber.com%2Fsearch.php%3Fform_keyword%3Dbilly%2Bburnette&mode=about_80music">Compare prices on Billy Burnette CDs here.</a> </li> <li><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://about.pricegrabber.com/mrdr.php?url=http%3A%2F%2Fabout.pricegrabber.com%2Fsearch.php%3Fform_keyword%3Dshawnee%2Bsmith%2Bdvd&mode=about_80music">Compare prices on Shawnee Smith DVDs here.</a></li> </ul> <p><em>Album Cover Image Courtesy of MCA</em></p><p style="background:#f5f3ef;border:1px solid #d5d0bf;clear:both;padding:.5em;"><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://80music.about.com/b/2010/09/03/this-weeks-forgotten-gem-of-the-80s-billy-burnettes-dont-say-no.htm">This Week's Forgotten Gem of the '80s - Billy Burnette's "Don't Say No"</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://80music.about.com/">About.com 80s Music</a> on Friday, September 3rd, 2010 at 20:57:24.</p><p><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://80music.about.com/b/2010/09/03/this-weeks-forgotten-gem-of-the-80s-billy-burnettes-dont-say-no.htm">Permalink</a> | <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://80music.about.com/b/2010/09/03/this-weeks-forgotten-gem-of-the-80s-billy-burnettes-dont-say-no.htm#gB3">Comment</a> | <a href="http://80music.about.com/gi/pages/shareurl.htm?PG=http://80music.about.com/b/2010/09/03/this-weeks-forgotten-gem-of-the-80s-billy-burnettes-dont-say-no.htm&zItl=This Week's Forgotten Gem of the '80s - Billy Burnette's "Don't Say No"">Email this</a></p>

This Week's Forgotten Gem of the '80s - Tom Robinson's "Atmospherics (Listen to the Radio)"
<p><img src="http://0.tqn.com/d/80music/1/0/s/G/-/-/tomrobinson.jpg" border="0" alt="tomrobinson.jpg" hspace="5" width="170" height="170" align="right" /> One of England's most unsung early <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://80music.about.com/od/genresmovements/p/postpunkprofile.htm">post-punk</a> artists as leader of the hard-rocking Tom Robinson Band, social activist and ragged singer-songwriter Tom Robinson continued to release music as a solo artist during the early '80s. Few in America were listening, of course, but Robinson remained a viable artist in his homeland - and for good reason. Though it may be true that Robinson is a great singer in the same way that <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://folkmusic.about.com/od/artistsaz/p/Dylan_profile.htm">Bob Dylan</a> is - that is to say, soulful and passionate if not perfectly precise - it's also true that the former writes distinctive songs of great power. Though known far more for his outspoken role as a gay rights activist and general critic of intolerance than as a rock music original, Robinson will surprise you at every turn if you let him.</p> <p>For instance, his 1983 single <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r9qz_bnJVlw">"Atmospherics (Listen to the Radio)"</a> arrives on a sophisticated groove that certainly expands Robinson's sound from his early <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://punkmusic.about.com/od/punk101/a/punkhistory2.htm">punk rock</a>-inspired efforts. As one of the main singles from his debut solo album <em><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://about.pricegrabber.com/mrdr.php?url=http%3A%2F%2Fabout.pricegrabber.com%2Fsearch_getprod.php%2Fmasterid%3D513867601%2Fsearch%3Dtom+robinson%2Fst%3Dproduct%2Fsv%3Dtitle&mode=about_80music">North by Northwest</a></em>, this tune artfully fuses elegant <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://80music.about.com/od/80smusic12/p/saxophone.htm">saxophone</a> lines that are never cheesy with Robinson's unmistakably street-gritty vocals. Listeners in Britain may have had plenty of opportunity to hear this song when it came out, but I include Robinson in this regular feature for all the American music lovers, like me, who were denied our Robinson fix way back when. It's time to know more about this artist than merely that he was one of rock's earliest and few openly gay performers of the punk era.</p> <ul> <li><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r9qz_bnJVlw">Sample or download "Atmospherics (Listen to the Radio)" here.</a> </li> <li><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://about.pricegrabber.com/mrdr.php?url=http%3A%2F%2Fabout.pricegrabber.com%2Fsearch_getprod.php%2Fmasterid%3D513867601%2Fsearch%3Dtom+robinson%2Fst%3Dproduct%2Fsv%3Dtitle&mode=about_80music">Compare prices on Tom Robinson CDs here.</a></li> </ul> <p><em>Album Cover Image Courtesy of Castaway<br /> </em></p><p style="background:#f5f3ef;border:1px solid #d5d0bf;clear:both;padding:.5em;"><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://80music.about.com/b/2010/08/24/this-weeks-forgotten-gem-of-the-80s-tom-robinsons-atmospherics-listen-to-the-radio.htm">This Week's Forgotten Gem of the '80s - Tom Robinson's "Atmospherics (Listen to the Radio)"</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://80music.about.com/">About.com 80s Music</a> on Tuesday, August 24th, 2010 at 22:07:12.</p><p><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://80music.about.com/b/2010/08/24/this-weeks-forgotten-gem-of-the-80s-tom-robinsons-atmospherics-listen-to-the-radio.htm">Permalink</a> | <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://80music.about.com/b/2010/08/24/this-weeks-forgotten-gem-of-the-80s-tom-robinsons-atmospherics-listen-to-the-radio.htm#gB3">Comment</a> | <a href="http://80music.about.com/gi/pages/shareurl.htm?PG=http://80music.about.com/b/2010/08/24/this-weeks-forgotten-gem-of-the-80s-tom-robinsons-atmospherics-listen-to-the-radio.htm&zItl=This Week's Forgotten Gem of the '80s - Tom Robinson's "Atmospherics (Listen to the Radio)"">Email this</a></p>

This Week's Forgotten Gem of the '80s - Keith Richards' "Make No Mistake"
<p><img src="http://0.tqn.com/d/80music/1/0/f/G/-/-/keithrichards.jpg" border="0" alt="keithrichards.jpg" hspace="5" width="170" height="170" align="right" />As one of the richest and most accomplished supporting rock and roll musicians of all time, <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://classicrock.about.com/od/bandsandartists/p/rollingstones.htm">Rolling Stones</a> guitarist <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://classicrock.about.com/od/bandsandartists/p/keith_richards.htm">Keith Richards</a> has mostly been content serving as the quieter artistic partner and foil for the band's frontman, <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://classicrock.about.com/od/bandsandartists/p/mick_jagger.htm">Mick Jagger</a>. However, during one of the pair's least harmonious periods during the late '80s, Richards took the opportunity to record his most ambitious genuine solo album, 1988's <a href="http://about.pricegrabber.com/mrdr.php?url=http%3A%2F%2Fabout.pricegrabber.com%2Fsearch_getprod.php%2Fmasterid%3D513806901%2Fsearch%3Dkeith+richards%2Fst%3Dproduct%2Fsv%3Dimage&mode=about_80music"><em>Talk Is Cheap</em></a>. Even better, he presented something that had not been heard much from the Stones in the decade since 1978's revered <a href="http://about.pricegrabber.com/mrdr.php?url=http%3A%2F%2Fabout.pricegrabber.com%2Fsearch_getprod.php%2Fmasterid%3D607511901%2Fsearch%3Drolling+stones+some+girls%2Fst%3Dproduct%2Fsv%3Dimage&mode=about_80music"><em>Some Girls</em></a>: ballsy, Stonesy guitar riffing as only Richards could deliver it.</p> <p>Despite the clear fact that Richards has anything but a singing voice well-suited for lead vocals, his compositions and his definite confidence in them help transform the record into an effective, compelling performance. One reason for the album's success, of course, is Richards' foundation of eclectic impulses, which he expertly uses to supplement his distinctive guitar work. <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001BG0U20?ie=UTF8&tag=aboucom80smus-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B001BG0U20">"Make No Mistake"</a> stands out as an excellent example of this kind of craftsmanship, weaving tasty horn arrangements with sultry, feminine backing vocals. In fact, the arrangement is just busy enough (while falling short of annoying overproduction) to allow Richards' lead singing to sound more than passable, even delightfully organic and haunting at times.</p> <ul> <li><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001BG0U20?ie=UTF8&tag=aboucom80smus-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B001BG0U20">Sample or download "Make No Mistake" here.</a> </li> <li><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://about.pricegrabber.com/mrdr.php?url=http%3A%2F%2Fabout.pricegrabber.com%2Fsearch.php%3Fform_keyword%3Dkeith%2Brichards&mode=about_80music">Compare prices on Keith Richards solo CDs here.</a></li> </ul> <p><em>Album Cover Image Courtesy of Virgin </em></p><p style="background:#f5f3ef;border:1px solid #d5d0bf;clear:both;padding:.5em;"><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://80music.about.com/b/2010/08/17/this-weeks-forgotten-gem-of-the-80s-keith-richards-make-no-mistake.htm">This Week's Forgotten Gem of the '80s - Keith Richards' "Make No Mistake"</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://80music.about.com/">About.com 80s Music</a> on Tuesday, August 17th, 2010 at 21:31:56.</p><p><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://80music.about.com/b/2010/08/17/this-weeks-forgotten-gem-of-the-80s-keith-richards-make-no-mistake.htm">Permalink</a> | <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://80music.about.com/b/2010/08/17/this-weeks-forgotten-gem-of-the-80s-keith-richards-make-no-mistake.htm#gB3">Comment</a> | <a href="http://80music.about.com/gi/pages/shareurl.htm?PG=http://80music.about.com/b/2010/08/17/this-weeks-forgotten-gem-of-the-80s-keith-richards-make-no-mistake.htm&zItl=This Week's Forgotten Gem of the '80s - Keith Richards' "Make No Mistake"">Email this</a></p>

This Week's Forgotten Gem of the '80s - McAuley-Schenker Group's "Anytime"
<p><img src="http://0.tqn.com/d/80music/1/0/_/G/-/-/mcauleyschenker.jpg" border="0" alt="mcauleyschenker.jpg" hspace="5" width="170" height="170" align="right" /> I've continued to explore the origins of hard rock over the past few weeks, which might seem like I've been spending far more time listening to '60s and '70s rock than sampling our beloved sounds of the '80s. But one of the coolest things about '60s and '70s hard rock is that it had so much influence on the massive variety of loud guitar rock that so dominated the '80s, ultimately it begins to feel like all this great music blends together like a savory, succulent puree.</p> <p>For instance, I recently made a stop in the vast realm of British guitar rock, a place I hadn't visited in quite some time, where I encountered the seminal band UFO. This powerhouse band featured one of rock's finest under-the-radar tandems in frontman Phil Mogg and German guitarist Michael Schenker. A vital missing link between the days of <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://classicrock.about.com/od/artistsae1/p/black_sabbath.htm">Black Sabbath</a> and the seemingly out-of-the-blue emergence of <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://rock.about.com/od/gunsnroses/p/gunsnroses.htm">Guns N' Roses</a> nearly two decades later, UFO contributed some unique molten blasts of power rock that stand up incredibly well 35 years later.</p> <p>Which brings us smoothly if somewhat indirectly to this week's feature, a truly underrated <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://80music.about.com/od/genresmovements/p/powerballads.htm">power ballad</a> from 1989, the very heart of the <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://80music.about.com/od/genresmovements/p/hairmetal.htm">hair metal</a> era, McAuley-Schenker Group's <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sg-PTOxR_pQ">"Anytime."</a> This latter-day version of Schenker's '80s career as bandleader may have looked the part in terms of clothing and hairstyle (<a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sg-PTOxR_pQ">check out the song's music video for proof</a>), but there's something about the vocals of frontman Robin McAuley and the Flying V power of Schenker's fretwork that calls to mind hard rock's more classic '70s era. This is a polished track, to be sure, but its deft blend of melodic pop metal hooks and pure overdrive rock and roll stands up quite well all these years later. <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://80music.about.com/od/80sbackgroundcultu2/p/mtvprofile.htm">MTV</a> could have used a few more bands like MSG to give the era's sound a bit more credibility, but alas, tunes like this can perhaps rest on the rich consolation that they couldn't fit more perfectly in this space as (nearly) forgotten gems.</p> <ul> <li><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sg-PTOxR_pQ">Listen to "Anytime" and watch the music video.</a> </li> <li><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://about.pricegrabber.com/mrdr.php?url=http%3A%2F%2Fabout.pricegrabber.com%2Fsearch_getprod.php%2Fmasterid%3D535407501%2Fsearch%3Dufo%2Fst%3Dproduct%2Fsv%3Dtitle&mode=about_80music">Compare prices on UFO CDs here.</a></li> </ul> <p><em>Album Cover Image Courtesy of Capitol</em></p><p style="background:#f5f3ef;border:1px solid #d5d0bf;clear:both;padding:.5em;"><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://80music.about.com/b/2010/08/09/this-weeks-forgotten-gem-of-the-80s-mcauley-schenker-groups-anytime.htm">This Week's Forgotten Gem of the '80s - McAuley-Schenker Group's "Anytime"</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://80music.about.com/">About.com 80s Music</a> on Monday, August 9th, 2010 at 22:21:44.</p><p><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://80music.about.com/b/2010/08/09/this-weeks-forgotten-gem-of-the-80s-mcauley-schenker-groups-anytime.htm">Permalink</a> | <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://80music.about.com/b/2010/08/09/this-weeks-forgotten-gem-of-the-80s-mcauley-schenker-groups-anytime.htm#gB3">Comment</a> | <a href="http://80music.about.com/gi/pages/shareurl.htm?PG=http://80music.about.com/b/2010/08/09/this-weeks-forgotten-gem-of-the-80s-mcauley-schenker-groups-anytime.htm&zItl=This Week's Forgotten Gem of the '80s - McAuley-Schenker Group's "Anytime"">Email this</a></p>

This Week's Forgotten Gem of the '80s - Bob Mould's "See a Little Light"
<p><img src="http://0.tqn.com/d/80music/1/0/z/F/-/-/bobmould.jpg" border="0" alt="bobmould.jpg" hspace="5" width="170" height="170" align="right" />After embracing extreme guitar noise for years as one of the artistic leaders of <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://80music.about.com/od/genresmovements/p/postpunkprofile.htm">post-punk</a> <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://altmusic.about.com/od/historyofaltindiemusic/a/alternavsindie.htm">indie rock</a> legends Husker Du, Bob Mould found his bridge to gentle acoustic guitar and power pop-inspired melody as a solo artist at the tail end of the '80s. That's not to say he didn't continue to explore buzz-saw guitar sonics and his own anger and confusion through his angst-ridden lyrics. But during his early years as a solo artist and then as frontman for <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://altmusic.about.com/od/historyofaltindiemusic/a/altmusic101.htm">alternative</a> guitar pop trio Sugar during the early '90s, Mould continually stretched himself as an utterly unique rock music innovator.</p> <p><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0016UI8VQ?ie=UTF8&tag=aboucom80smus-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B0016UI8VQ">"See a Little Light,"</a> a bouncy but still somehow piercing track from 1989's <em><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://about.pricegrabber.com/mrdr.php?url=http%3A%2F%2Fabout.pricegrabber.com%2Fsearch.php%3Fform_keyword%3Dbob%2Bmould&mode=about_80music">Workbook</a></em>, was just one of the first modern rock classics to spring from Mould during his most fertile post-<a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://altmusic.about.com/od/artists/a/nirvana.htm">Nirvana</a> years. In addition, having largely eschewed his previous propensity for shouted vocals, Mould began to emerge as the moving and soulful singer he'd always had plenty of potential to be. This Week's Forgotten Gem of the '80s - Wishbone Ash's "Living Proof"
<img src="http://0.tqn.com/d/80music/1/0/u/F/-/-/wishboneash.jpg" border="0" alt="wishboneash.jpg" hspace="5" width="170" height="170" align="right" /> I've been on a '70s hard rock kick of late, and when I say that I don't mean usual <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://classicrock.about.com/od/history/a/crock_IOI.htm">classic rock</a> suspects like <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://classicrock.about.com/od/bandsandartists/p/led_zepp.htm">Led Zeppelin</a>, <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://classicrock.about.com/od/bandsandartists/p/rush_profile.htm">Rush</a> or <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://classicrock.about.com/od/glossary/p/vanhalen_bio.htm">Van Halen</a>. I'm talking about some guitar-heavy, brain-rattling stuff that has pretty much never been played on the radio, ranging from Humble Pie to Spooky Tooth to Mark Farner-sung Grand Funk Railroad album tracks like the explosive <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000SXL1NY?ie=UTF8&tag=aboucom80smus-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B000SXL1NY">"Sin's a Good Man's Brother."</a> I hate to admit that my awareness of this special, often-British hybrid that lies somewhere in a remote ravine between <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://classicrock.about.com/od/newreleases/a/101_bluesrock.htm">blues rock</a>, <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://heavymetal.about.com/od/heavymetal101/a/101_history.htm">heavy metal</a>, <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://classicrock.about.com/od/newreleases/a/101_psychrock.htm">psychedelic</a>, jam band and punk rock styles has lain dormant for as long as it has, but the fact is I still thought Grand Funk was pretty lame until the closing credits of recent action-thriller <a href="http://about.pricegrabber.com/mrdr.php?url=http%3A%2F%2Fabout.pricegrabber.com%2Fsearch.php%3Fform_keyword%3Dlaw%2Babiding%2Bcitizen&mode=about_80music"><em>Law-Abiding Citizen</em></a>. Let's just say I probably won't remember much about that movie next year, but Farner's distinctive wail and dynamic lead guitar have now, finally, been permanently seared into my brain.</p> <p>That leads us, somehow, to this week's forgotten gem, a latter-day tune from groundbreaking British hard rock legends Wishbone Ash. I don't think it's merely because at times I found my head jammed into unpleasant and ignorant musical orifices - though that's likely true - that I didn't even know this band was still together during the '80s. I think something more sinister was probably at work to deny rock music fans of the '80s a chance to hear some of the most genuine heavy rock bands of the previous decade. For instance, if I had a nickel for the number of people I've met who know Thin Lizzy only through <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000V68TJM?ie=UTF8&tag=aboucom80smus-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B000V68TJM">"The Boys Are Back in Town"</a> and possibly <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000V64SZG?ie=UTF8&tag=aboucom80smus-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B000V64SZG">"Jailbreak,"</a> I'd - well, I'd certainly have a crapload of nickels.</p> <p>If you thought mainstream rock guitar bands of the era were capable only of producing slickly produced <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://80music.about.com/od/genresmovements/p/arenarock.htm">arena rock</a>, then please navigate yourself to <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000W22586?ie=UTF8&tag=aboucom80smus-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B000W22586">"Living Proof,"</a> the ceaselessly interesting lead-off track from the 1980 Wishbone Ash album, <em>Just Testing</em>. I really would have loved to hear this stuff on my local classic rock radio station, but I'll be damned if they didn't seem to have an endless Styx playlist from which they dared not deviate. Not that I was complaining so much at the time, so I'll make up for lost time and complain now. Don't let anyone tell you that listening to '70s hard rock can't enhance your '80s music listening pleasure, and vice versa.</p> <ul> <li><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000W22586?ie=UTF8&tag=aboucom80smus-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B000W22586">Sample or download "Living Proof" here. </a></li> <li><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://about.pricegrabber.com/mrdr.php?url=http%3A%2F%2Fabout.pricegrabber.com%2Fsearch.php%3Fform_keyword%3Dwishbone%2Bash&mode=about_80music">Compare prices on Wishbone Ash CDs here.</a></li> </ul> <p><em>Album Cover Image Courtesy of MCA UK</em></p><p style="background:#f5f3ef;border:1px solid #d5d0bf;clear:both;padding:.5em;"><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://80music.about.com/b/2010/07/20/this-weeks-forgotten-gem-of-the-80s-wishbone-ashs-living-proof.htm">This Week's Forgotten Gem of the '80s - Wishbone Ash's "Living Proof"</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://80music.about.com/">About.com 80s Music</a> on Tuesday, July 20th, 2010 at 23:53:47.</p><p><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://80music.about.com/b/2010/07/20/this-weeks-forgotten-gem-of-the-80s-wishbone-ashs-living-proof.htm">Permalink</a> | <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://80music.about.com/b/2010/07/20/this-weeks-forgotten-gem-of-the-80s-wishbone-ashs-living-proof.htm#gB3">Comment</a> | <a href="http://80music.about.com/gi/pages/shareurl.htm?PG=http://80music.about.com/b/2010/07/20/this-weeks-forgotten-gem-of-the-80s-wishbone-ashs-living-proof.htm&zItl=This Week's Forgotten Gem of the '80s - Wishbone Ash's "Living Proof"">Email this</a></p>

This Week's Forgotten Gem of the '80s - The Church's "Lost"
<p><img src="http://0.tqn.com/d/80music/1/0/c/F/-/-/thechurchstarfish.jpg" border="0" alt="thechurchstarfish.jpg" hspace="5" width="170" height="170" align="right" /> Few '80s bands - even the ones that really, really looked the part - made music as consistently mesmerizing, haunting, and gothically satisfying as Australian <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://altmusic.about.com/od/historyofaltindiemusic/a/altmusic101.htm">alternative rock</a> group The Church. I was reminded of that fact intensely and in the best way last week while cruising the contents of my iPod. This album track from 1988's <a href="http://about.pricegrabber.com/mrdr.php?url=http%3A%2F%2Fabout.pricegrabber.com%2Fsearch_getprod.php%2Fmasterid%3D509053201%2Fsearch%3Dstarfish+church%2Fst%3Dproduct%2Fsv%3Dimage&mode=about_80music"><em>Starfish</em></a> ambles along with a creepy confidence that is pretty much unheard of in the wide expanse of rock and roll lyricism.</p> <p>I don't even have a chance to gush about the musicality of <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001BHE4F8?ie=UTF8&tag=aboucom80smus-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B001BHE4F8">"Lost"</a> in the limited space in which I'm working here, chiefly because Steve Kilbey's vocal delivery of lines like the following is so damn satisfying: "The pursuit of adulation is your butter and your bread/It's an exquisite corpse and its lips are red/And its teeth are glistening." I don't know about you, but I don't think it's entirely a coincidence that I'm preparing to watch in mere moments the latest episode of HBO's powerhouse vampire drama <a href="http://horror.about.com/od/trueblood/a/trueblood.htm"><em>True Blood</em></a>. That's called a segue, ladies and gents.</p> <ul> <li><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001BHE4F8?ie=UTF8&tag=aboucom80smus-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B001BHE4F8">Sample or download "Lost" here. </a></li> <li><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://about.pricegrabber.com/mrdr.php?url=http%3A%2F%2Fabout.pricegrabber.com%2Fsearch_getprod.php%2Fmasterid%3D533326301%2Fsearch%3Dchurch%2Fst%3Dproduct%2Fsv%3Dtitle&mode=about_80music">Compare prices on The Church CDs here. </a></li> <li><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://80music.about.com/od/top10list1/tp/downunderacts.htm">Top 10 '80s Down Under Artists</a></li> <li><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://80music.about.com/od/80smusic12/tp/topsongsof1988.htm">Top 10 Songs of 1988</a></li> </ul> <p><em>Album Cover Image Courtesy of Arista</em></p><p style="background:#f5f3ef;border:1px solid #d5d0bf;clear:both;padding:.5em;"><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://80music.about.com/b/2010/07/11/this-weeks-forgotten-gem-of-the-80s-the-churchs-lost.htm">This Week's Forgotten Gem of the '80s - The Church's "Lost"</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://80music.about.com/">About.com 80s Music</a> on Sunday, July 11th, 2010 at 20:55:46.</p><p><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://80music.about.com/b/2010/07/11/this-weeks-forgotten-gem-of-the-80s-the-churchs-lost.htm">Permalink</a> | <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://80music.about.com/b/2010/07/11/this-weeks-forgotten-gem-of-the-80s-the-churchs-lost.htm#gB3">Comment</a> | <a href="http://80music.about.com/gi/pages/shareurl.htm?PG=http://80music.about.com/b/2010/07/11/this-weeks-forgotten-gem-of-the-80s-the-churchs-lost.htm&zItl=This Week's Forgotten Gem of the '80s - The Church's "Lost"">Email this</a></p>

It's Been a Tough Couple of Weeks for Former Superstars of '80s Music
<p><img src="http://0.tqn.com/d/80music/1/0/a/4/-/-/georgemichaelfaith.jpg" border="0" alt="georgemichaelfaith.jpg" hspace="5" width="170" height="170" align="right" /> A number of '80s music stars may be wishing this week they could go back to the more glorious if not necessarily more innocent days of pop music superstardom. In a stunning instance of cruel serendipity, largely negative, generally embarrassing news sprouted in just the last couple of weeks concerning '80s mainstays <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://80music.about.com/od/artistsband1/p/menatwork.htm">Men at Work</a>, <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://80music.about.com/od/artistskp/p/georgemichael.htm">George Michael</a>, <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://80music.about.com/od/artistskp/p/motleycrue.htm">Motley Crue</a> frontman Vince Neil, and, to a lesser extent, even <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://80music.about.com/od/prince/p/princeprofile.htm">Prince</a>. While some of this news is anything but new or surprising, it does tend to take away from the significant accomplishments of all of these entertainers from more than a quarter-century ago. If you're interested in these artists for purely musical reasons, feel free to explore at will other sections of this site. However, for the sake of full disclosure, check below for capsules of recent incidents involving these former superstars that, unfortunately, have very little to do with music or artistry.</p> <ul> <li><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment_and_arts/10518787.stm">Men at Work Must Pay Royalties in "Down Under" Plagiarism Case</a> </li> <li><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://www.inthenews.co.uk/news/entertainment/music/george-michael-arrested-after-driving-into-north-london-shop-$21381256.htm">George Michael Crashes His Car... This Week's Forgotten Gem of the '80s - Meat Puppets' "Split Myself in Two"
<p><img src="http://0.tqn.com/d/80music/1/0/X/A/-/-/meatpuppets2.jpg" border="0" alt="meatpuppets2.jpg" hspace="5" width="170" height="170" align="right" /> As a long-haired, bearded, 38-year-old <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://punkmusic.about.com/od/punk101/a/punkhistory2.htm">punk rock</a> fan, I have an inkling of how Arizona alternative pioneers the Meat Puppets must have felt when <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://punkmusic.about.com/od/punkinprint/p/Hardcore.htm">hardcore</a> and punk fans questioned their genre credibility throughout the group's expansive mid-'80s experiments. It's not always easy to maneuver through this world, after all, when a person's appearance does not match up with his or her behavior or interests. It can be even harder to contain conflicting multitudes in the world of pop music. But I'm not complaining, if only because the rebellious spirit of bands like this continues to inspire me as an aging Generation X-er who has arrived extremely late for a lot of great '80s music.</p> <p>1984's <em>Meat Puppets II</em> is a wonderfully confounding record that scoffs at traditional boundaries, and its lead-off track, the wonderfully manic <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001RZFEQM?ie=UTF8&tag=aboucom80smus-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B001RZFEQM">"Split Myself in Two,"</a> feels like an uncalibrated industrial machine about to self-destruct and spit sharp metal components at unsuspecting bystanders. That's a sparkling rock and roll compliment, by the way, in case there's any mystery as to my viewpoint on this underrated band. Start with this album, perhaps, but don't stop there. <p><img src="http://0.tqn.com/d/80music/1/0/N/9/-/-/bluerodeodiamond.jpg" border="0" alt="bluerodeodiamond.jpg" hspace="5" width="170" height="170" align="right" /> The curiosity of a friend of mine this week thrust me headlong into an obsessive listening stint, this time focused on one of my favorite <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://80music.about.com/od/genresmovements/p/rootsrock.htm">roots rock</a> bands, Canada's <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://www.bluerodeo.com/">Blue Rodeo</a>. I'm appreciative of the push his interest provided for me, if for no other reason because I enjoyed a particularly pleasant car audio experience yesterday during my commute. Even better, I realized that although I have featured this band on this site a couple of times, I have yet to celebrate its quality output in this space, which is a crime against a group puzzlingly underrated in America.</p> <p>Although I tend to favor the melodic balladry of Jim Cuddy's songwriting and lead vocals when I peruse the Blue Rodeo canon, this album track from 1989's <em><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://about.pricegrabber.com/mrdr.php?url=http%3A%2F%2Fabout.pricegrabber.com%2Fsearch_getprod.php%2Fmasterid%3D574012401%2Fsearch%3Dblue+rodeo%2Fst%3Dproduct%2Fsv%3Dimage&mode=about_80music">Diamond Mine</a></em> is a more than effective showpiece for the band's other leader, lead guitarist Greg Keelor. This guy is a tasteful, deliberate electric guitarist of the highest order, whose contributions to the Blue Rodeo sound cannot be overstated. However, as a lead singer Keelor navigates a chameleonic path often as challenging as his expansive songwriting, and on <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000PICN02?ie=UTF8&tag=aboucom80smus-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B000PICN02">"Love and Understanding"</a> his laid-back delivery works wonders. Other personal favorites of mine with Keelor on lead vocals include the mesmerizing <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000PICXE8?ie=UTF8&tag=aboucom80smus-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B000PICXE8">"Side of the Road,"</a> from 1995's brilliant <em>Nowhere to Here.</em></p> <ul> <li><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000PICN02?ie=UTF8&tag=aboucom80smus-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B000PICN02">Sample or download "Love and Understanding" here.</a></li> <li><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://about.pricegrabber.com/mrdr.php?url=http%3A%2F%2Fabout.pricegrabber.com%2Fsearch.php%3Fform_keyword%3Dblue%2Brodeo&mode=about_80music">Compare prices on Blue Rodeo CDs here.</a> </li> <li><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://80music.about.com/od/genresmovements/tp/heartlandrocksongs.htm">Top 10 Heartland Rock Songs of the '80s</a> </li> <li><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://80music.about.com/od/top10list1/tp/Top--80s-Songwriting-Teams.htm">Top 10 Songwriting Teams of the '80s</a></li> </ul> <p><em>Album Cover Image Courtesy of BlueRodeo.com</em></p><p style="background:#f5f3ef;border:1px solid #d5d0bf;clear:both;padding:.5em;"><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://80music.about.com/b/2010/06/26/this-weeks-forgotten-gem-of-the-80s-blue-rodeos-love-and-understanding.htm">This Week's Forgotten Gem of the '80s - Blue Rodeo's "Love and Understanding"</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://80music.about.com/">About.com 80s Music</a> on Saturday, June 26th, 2010 at 13:27:23.</p><p><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://80music.about.com/b/2010/06/26/this-weeks-forgotten-gem-of-the-80s-blue-rodeos-love-and-understanding.htm">Permalink</a> | <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://80music.about.com/b/2010/06/26/this-weeks-forgotten-gem-of-the-80s-blue-rodeos-love-and-understanding.htm#gB3">Comment</a> | <a href="http://80music.about.com/gi/pages/shareurl.htm?PG=http://80music.about.com/b/2010/06/26/this-weeks-forgotten-gem-of-the-80s-blue-rodeos-love-and-understanding.htm&zItl=This Week's Forgotten Gem of the '80s - Blue Rodeo's "Love and Understanding"">Email this</a></p>
