Pro Poker Player Phil "The Unabomber" Laak Back to Playing Cards After Crashing ATV

Professional poker player Phil "The Unibomber" Laak is well on the way to recovery after he crashed his ATV while riding with Antonio "The Magician" Esfandiari in Oregon a few weeks ago.

Laak suffered substantial injuries to his arm and face in the accident and has undergone surgery to repair some of the damage he suffered in the accident.

It's good to hear he's getting back on track, and I'd like to point out that a little safety goes a long way. Without having actually been there, I think it's safe to say that if Laak had taken a little time to familiarize himself with the terrain he would have made different decisions that could have prevented his accident.

Pro Poker Player Phil "The Unabomber" Laak Back to Playing Cards After Crashing ATV originally appeared on About.com ATVs / Offroading on Tuesday, August 31st, 2010 at 20:15:02.

Permalink | Comment | <a href="http://4wheeldrive.about.com/gi/pages/shareurl.htm?PG=http://4wheeldrive.about.com/b/2010/08/31/pro-poker-player-phil-the-unabomber-laak-back-to-playing-cards-after-crashing-atv.htm&zItl=Pro Poker Player Phil "The Unabomber" Laak Back to Playing Cards After Crashing ATV">Email this

Tip for Buying a Used ATV: Get the Title

Tips for Buying a Used ATV: Title of Ownership
© Matt Finley, Licensed to About.com

With the economy in the toilet and people spending less money it makes sense to buy a used ATV instead of a new one, if you know what to look for. And I'm not talking about only the mechanical aspects of it...

Paperwork is paramount. Especially when buying used. No matter what, make sure you get the actual title and don't settle for a simple bill of sale if you decide to buy used.

If you don't have the actual title of ownership, often referred to as a "pink slip" or simply, "the pink", you could face registration problems and even risk having the actual holder of the title claiming ownership.

That could cause a real headache and a lot more money than you anticipated. Make sure you get the title when you buy a used ATV.

Tip for Buying a Used ATV: Get the Title originally appeared on About.com ATVs / Offroading on Sunday, August 29th, 2010 at 22:34:35.

Permalink | Comment | Email this

The Fruitland City Hall in Maryland will be having a zoning board hearing on September 7th to discuss the proposed ATV Park.

As mentioned, the benefits of having an ATV park in the area are many. It's a place where ATVs can ride legally, in a controlled environment. It will be much safer and much more profitable for the area's citizens and visitors.

Help make the new ATV Park a reality by attending the hearing at the Fruitland City Hall at 7:00pm and voicing your opinion.

There will be people there to oppose the planned ATV park because they don't want to have the "eye sore" in the area.

Fruitland City Hall to Hear ATV Park Case, Need Your Support! originally appeared on About.com ATVs / Offroading on Thursday, August 26th, 2010 at 21:57:29.

Permalink | Comment | Email this

Anyone can enter to win the Grizz by simply registering online at www.yamahaoutdoors.com/nhfday anytime from August 18, 2010, through the end of November.

Our involvement with National Hunting and Fishing Day over the years has proved to be an excellent opportunity for Yamaha to further promote and support one of its core values -- outdoor conservation and ethical hunting and fishing," said Steve Nessl, marketing manager for Yamaha's ATV/SxS group. "Yamaha is more involved in the hunting and fishing communities than any other ATV manufacturer and we look forward to another great NHF Day celebration.

Scheduled annually on the fourth Saturday of September, this year the celebration of hunting, fishing and conservation is set for September 25, 2010. NHF Day serves as the most effective grass roots effort ever taken to promote outdoor sports and conservation. Yamaha, through its relationships with organizations such as Ducks Unlimited, Safari Club International, Buckmasters, NWTF and NHF Day, among others, is a continued supporter of conservation efforts for outdoor recreational enthusiasts.

The sweepstakes is open to all hosts, volunteers and attendees of any of the hundreds of nationwide events celebrating NHF Day. Details Unfold in California 200 Offroad Race Spectator Deaths

K-Rail Prevents Offroad Truck From Going Off Track
© Matt Finley, Licensed to About.com

There have been a couple of interesting stories popping up in light of the terrible crash in the Mojave Desert Racing (MDR) California 200 last weekend. 8 spectators were killed and more were injured when an offroad race truck, driven by San Marcos resident Brett Sloppy, rolled into a crowd.

First and foremost, what's the deal with people trying to get so close to these trucks that they can literally touch them as they go by at freeway speeds? Really? I've been hearing report after report about spectators routinely getting as close as possible to these vehicles, whether it's offroad trucks or rally cars. So close they can, (and do) touch them!

Crazy!

I also heard that MDR is supposed to enforce something like a 50 foot cushion between the track and any spectators. This was clearly not the case in this tragedy. I doubt MDR will weather this well.

Many of the events I've attended have either a set distance between a race course and any pedestrians, or a heavy duty barrier in place, like the k-rail pictured above, which actually prevented that CORR truck driven by Scott Douglas from hitting me while I had my back turned.

There is speculation that the truck that went through the area before Sloppy was going much slower and was in the landing area when Sloppy's truck came down, causing Sloppy to slam on the brakes and roll. It is rumored that if Sloppy had hit that other truck there would have been two trucks rolling out of control into the crowd instead of just one.

I've also heard that one of the victims was seen pushing two people out of the way before he was struck. A true hero.

Details Unfold in California 200 Offroad Race Spectator Deaths originally appeared on About.com ATVs / Offroading on Tuesday, August 17th, 2010 at 23:53:48.

Permalink | Comment | Email this

8 Dead in California 200 Offroad Race Crash. Angry Crowd Blames Driver, Chase Him Away

8 People are dead after a crash in the California 200 desert race. The offroad truck lost control in an area known as the rock pile in the Soggy Dry Lake in San Bernardino, California.

This is a terrible tragedy that could have been avoided. The spectators that were in the area of the crash, which numbered into the hundreds, were merely feet from the track in an area clearly known for it's tendency to cause drivers to lose control and get airborne.

The sad part about this is the loss for the families of those who died or were injured, and what that poor driver must be going through emotionally. This will be with him for the rest of his life.

But another issue that should be taken into consideration is that those spectators were there of their own free will. They weren't told by the driver to go there to watch the race.

Yet the survivors in the crowd after the accident became hostile towards the driver, forcing him to be evacuated for his own safety. It's not the driver's fault yet the LA Times played on this outburst of emotion by using an edited quote from Officer Joaquin Zubieta of the California Highway Patrol, the agency investigating the deadly crash, which sounded to me like they were trying to blame the driver for the spectators being right next to the track:

People didn't have much of a chance ... to get out of the way.

Fact is, those spectators didn't give themselves much of a chance ... to get out of the way. If you go to a sanctioned offroad desert race and decide to take up a spot feet from the track where there is no barrier between you and the track and the driver makes a mistake and hits you, you can't blame the driver. You have to take responsibility for your own actions at some point.

8 Dead in California 200 Offroad Race Crash. ATV Safety Institute Teaches Eco-Responsibility, Not Just How to Ride

ATV Safety Institute Teaches Respect for ATV Trails
© Matt Finley, Licensed to About.com

Seems every time I turn around I see some edgy eco-extremist group claiming ATVs destroy the eco-systems they ride in. Fact is, when ATV and offroading trails are used they are no different than an equestrian path and are not much worse than walking paths.

The ATV Safety Institute (ASI) covers the effects ATVs have on trail systems. As you can see from the above picture, ATV trails are not much different than walking paths. In fact, if I didn't tell you, you probably wouldn't even know that was an ATV trail.

That's not to say ATVs can't/don't have an impact on the environment. They do just like every other type of transportation. From 16 lane super-highways to hiking paths through the back-country, we ALL have an impact. How you ride has an influence on how much impact you have.

So when I hear people making absurd claims about how much worse ATVs are than everything else I often have to hold back my urge to laugh in their face while explaining the meaning of hypocrisy.

ATV Safety Institute Teaches Eco-Responsibility, Not Just How to Ride originally appeared on About.com ATVs / Offroading on Sunday, August 15th, 2010 at 11:41:57.

Permalink | Comment | Email this

As Youth ATV Regulations Get Tighter, You Should Get to Know the ATV Safety Institute

6 Year Old Learning to Pass Obstacles at ASI
© Matt Finley, Licensed to About.com

Seems every season we get a new set of rules and regulations laid on us when it comes to riding ATVs and offroading. A lot of that focus seems to be on the environment lately, and often it's on kids.

Teaching kids at an early age is a great way to ensure their safety and their respect for themselves and the places they ride. The ATV Safety Institute (ASI) helps promote that philosophy.

The ASI has expert instructors that are very personable and knowledgeable in the field of ATV safety and eco-friendly behavior. Not only do they know ATV safety, they know how to explain it to others. That makes a huge difference for kids because kids don t have any pre-conceived notions about ATVs or the environment.

Kids are taught to not just wear a helmet, but to wear a helmet to keep your head protected when you fall. They are taught that a seat isn't as big as it is so you can ride passengers, it s that big so you can move around on it to make the ATV go where you want it to.

It makes a difference when the students know why, not just what.

As Youth ATV Regulations Get Tighter, You Should Get to Know the ATV Safety Institute originally appeared on About.com ATVs / Offroading on Friday, August 13th, 2010 at 20:10:22.

Permalink | Comment | Email this

Massive Land Grab: BLM Could Close 140 Million Acres of PUBLIC Land!

2 months ago we told you that the US House Committee approved a measure that would force the BLM (U.S. Interior Department) to release documents that cover a proposal that could close up to 13 million acres to OHV use.

Well, the documents were released, and their contents were mind-numbing! The AMA said there could be as many as 13 million acres of public land at risk of being closed.

The AMA was wrong.

The BLM document drop has what appears to be very detail plans outlining the particulars for the closing of as much as 140 million acres of PUBLIC land! (Yeah, that's 140,000,000 acres!)

BLM documents outline how the federal government is seeking to manage federal lands through more restrictive land management practices without input from the PUBLIC owners of said land.

AMA:

The internal memo states that some 130 million to 140 million acres -- an area roughly the size of Colorado and Wyoming combined -- are under consideration for special land-use designations that could further restrict off-highway riding. This is about half of the 264 million acres of public land managed by the BLM.

At another point in the document, the BLM states that about 35 million acres of the land it manages "should be considered for a new and/or heightened conservation designation."

The BLM memo spells out a proposed plan for public land-use designations that could ban off-highway vehicle riding by supporting certain congressional land-use designation proposals, having the president pull an end run around Congress by unilaterally naming areas as national monuments "should the legislative process not prove fruitful" and to use the agency's internal land-use planning process to accomplish the bureau's goals for managing "conservation values" when those other two efforts fail.

Massive Land Grab: BLM Could Close 140 Million Acres of PUBLIC Land! originally appeared on About.com ATVs / Offroading on Wednesday, August 11th, 2010 at 21:05:58.

Permalink | Comment | Email this
