Jane Addams' 150th Birthday
Born September 6, 1860, Jane Addams was a settlement house reformer, and also a pacifist and women's rights advocate. She practiced a radical kind of "neighborliness" in living among the poor and immigrant population of Chicago, experimenting with programs that would make a better life for these people, and that would allow the children to grow up healthy and educated.

Varieties of Feminism
Feminism -- the analysis that women are now not treated fairly or equal plus a commitment to moving to fairness and equality -- has come in many forms. What is "fair" and what is "equal"? Here are some of the varieties of feminist ideas:

Two Matildas
Two Matildas, cousins, were involved in the struggle for the crown of England in the 12th century, currently featured in the Starz series The Pillars of the Earth. One was the daughter of Henry I, named by him and confirmed by nobles during his lifetime as his heir. The other was the wife of Stephen, who moved quickly when Henry died to claim the crown by right of descent from William the Conqueror through his mother. That Matilda was also a countess in her own right. Their mothers were sisters and thus they shared a common grandmother: Saint Margaret of Scotland.

The name Matilda, an obviously popular one at the time among royals and nobility (there are a lot of other Matildas involved in this history beyond these two) might also be rendered as Maud or Maude or Mahaut or even Mold, depending on the source, and the series calls the widowed Empress Maude.

Read more about these two women who were at the center of this dynastic struggle:

Nineteenth Amendment - Women's Right to Vote
The text of the Nineteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution is simple:

The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any States on Account of sex.
The Congress shall have the power by appropriate legislation to enforce the provisions of this article.

The path to getting this text made part of the law of the land effective August 26, 1920, was not so simple. Or short.

In 1776, New Jersey gave women with over $250 in property the right to vote, but that right was soon rescinded. Beginning in 1837, women began winning the right to vote in local and state jurisdictions, first in school elections, then in other elections. In 1869, territory and future state Wyoming gave women the same right to vote as men. Read more details about the slow progress of women's suffrage, right up to 90 years ago when women won the right to vote in the U.S. on an equal basis with men:

Women's Suffrage Timeline State by State
